My Favorite School Subject

My name is Selama Tesfamariam. I am in the 10th grade at Montgomery Blair High School. I was born in Eritrea, which is located in east Africa. I am honored to be a part of this wonderful summer project facilitated by the President of Gimie’s Organization for Youth, Inc., Ms. Gimie Doherty. During this project, I have discovered how I can express and deliver my opinions and ideas to the world. This project was helpful in improving my writing skills. It was one of the greatest opportunities I’ve had so far to enhance my leadership skills.

This is the President, Ms. Gimie and myself at the end of the final project

The theme of the Learning Exchange Program was to conduct research and engage in trainings on leadership-related topics. My research topic focused on my favorite subject, history. I love history because it is everything. Without history, I would not be the person that I am today. History tells us our past mistakes and inaccurate decisions so that we can understand perfectly our present for a bright and successful future. Our today and our future can be understood through historical facts.

History is my favorite subject because it is the most crucial way to learn about each others’ culture and beliefs. This is why I think it is an important subject. The way we think, behave, and perform act today will become history tomorrow. History supports us to succeed in life because it teaches us what we have done wrong in the past, so that we can change it in the future. I love history because it gets me thinking about who I am and where I am from. I find that books are important references to study people’s history, culture and beliefs. This is because they are written by different authors and offer different clues.

As I mentioned before, I strongly believe that history helps us to be more successful in the future. I mean, people can learn from the past wrong decisions that were made by their ancestors, leaders, and educators. I personally have an interest in leadership and politics. Consequently, the history of past leaders informs me how I can become a successful and desirable leader in my community. History is a reference for me to learn what sorts of leaders were victorious in their time, so that I can adhere to the right way of guiding people from them. From historical leaders, I also can learn how to handle different people with their different desires. History reminds me the mistakes that the past leaders have made, so that I do not repeat the same mistakes.

I have a message for youth. If you want to make a difference in your community, I encourage you to get involved. I believe you can benefit from GOFY's Programs. The Learning Exchange Program (LEP) this summer was outstanding, and I have learned so much. This Program helped me improve my communication skills and helped increase my self-esteem. This organization has so much to offer and all the team members show a strong commitment and want youth to succeed.

For parents, stakeholders, local businesses, grants foundations, youth rely on your contributions. Many youths including myself are facing many obstacles in life. If you do not intervene to help us overcome this challenge, our community will suffer and we won’t have the chance to accomplish our goals and dreams. Please invest in this great organization and make a difference in our community. Your donation is an investment. Every penny counts.
