The Creativity of Mathematics

My name is Tayina Sylvain. I am in the 10th grade at Sherwood High School. I was born in the U.S. in Silver Spring, Maryland. I am thrilled to have been part of this Learning Exchange Project facilitated by the President of Gimie’s Organization for Youth, Inc., Ms. Gimie Doherty. During this project, I learned how to become a better leader and how to put myself more out there so that I can help my community or other communities in any way I can. It helped me come out of my shell more and become more confident in my choices. It also helped me see myself going farther and accomplishing more things that will help me become more successful in helping others strengthen their own leadership skills.

This is the President, Ms. Gimie and myself at the end of the final project

The theme of the Learning Exchange Program was conducting research and engaging in leadership training. I chose to focus on my favorite subject, mathematics, for this project.

• MESMERIZING • ASTONISHING • THRILLING • HIGHLY VALUED

A Wide Range Math has so many parts which include: Algebra, Geometry, Trigonometry, and Calculus. It is such a wide range of topics that combine to create one huge adventure. It is spread out all across the world, helping children and adults apply these in concepts in real life. Why Is Math My Favorite? Math helps our everyday lives to stay orderly. It helps with thinking, problem-solving, and communication skills. Math is used in EVERYTHING, whether it’s cooking, constructing, sleeping, etc. This subject not only sharpens our minds it opens our eyes to new ways and experiences.

More Than Just The Surface Math is deeper than just formulas and equations. It was the beginning of the first bloom of knowledge. It started way before our time and has evolved and developed in so many ways--ways which everyone can use to their benefit to become stronger not only mentally but physically as well.

I have a message for youth. If you want to make a difference in your community, I encourage you to get involved. I believe you can benefit from GOFY's Programs. The Learning Exchange Program (LEP) this summer was outstanding, and I have learned so much. This Program helped me improve my communication skills and helped increase my self-esteem. This organization has so much to offer and all the team members show a strong commitment and want youth to succeed.
